Q: How do I apply for Meals on Wheels?
A: You, a family member, or a professional caregiver may apply by telephone by calling Meals on Wheels at 863-257-1780 or email [email protected] The application process takes approximately 10 minutes and requests information such as name, address, phone number, health status, etc. Certain information is required and all application information is kept confidential.
Q: What is the cost?
A: Full-pay clients pay $5.00 per hot meal. Service begins with the purchase of 5 meals, or $25.00 Payable by check. After payment of the initial 5 meals, clients are invoiced monthly. The program has no minimum weekly meal requirement. Financial assistance may be available if meal costs represent a hardship. Reduced pricing will depend on income guidelines. Q: Am I eligible for Meals on Wheels?
A: To be eligible for the program, you must reside in the Avon Park vicinity. We have no age, health or income requirements. Other similar progams are available in Sebring, Lake Placid, Polk and Hardee County
Q: What does a typical meal consist of?
A: Meals consist of a hot meal with a protein, vegetable, starch, bottled water and a sweet desert. An additional snack is provided at least once a week.
Q: Can you accommodate medical conditions that require a special diet?
A: Home-Delivered meals are prepared daily, provide 1/3 of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) and are approved by a registered dietitian. Diabetic meals are available for individuals who have special needs.
Q: Do I have to live alone to receive Meals on Wheels?
A: No, you can live with family members or others.
Q: Can I suspend service for a couple of days without being cancelled from the program?
A: Yes, just let us know at least 1 day in advance on what days meals will not be needed and the date that you would like us to resume deliveries.
Q: Is Meals on Wheels available to me for only a limited time?
A: No, we are here when you need us for as long as you need us.
Q: When are meals delivered?
A: Meals are delivered between 10:15am and 12:00 Noon Monday through Friday. Someone must be home to accept the meal. If someone cannot be home to receive the delivery, a cooler must be placed outside the door for the delivery to be completed.
